When Dermalogica sent me to one of their skin experts for a Face Mapping I didn’t really know what to expect next. I was prescribed certain products in line with the different things my therapist had identified about my skin, and eagerly awaited their arrival.
Christmas came early when the postman left this big box of Dermalogica goodies on my doorstep and it took a lot of restraint to resist shouting about them straight away! I know a lot of people hear the term ‘skin regime’ and immediately imagine a daily chore that eats into precious morning sleep, however all these products are quick and easy to use, and are just as effective morning and evening. In the past I’ve been really lazy with my skin, using the odd baby wipe and a bit of supermarket face wash, often forgetting about moisturising altogether! However the products from Dermalogica are designed for ease of use and there really is no excuse not to get into routine with them. I’ve now been sticking to my new Dermalogica skin regime for a few weeks so I thought I’d share the results…
First up, we’ve got the Special Cleansing Gel. It’s soap free which isn’t something I had even considered before as being a desirable feature, but actually this makes loads of sense! Have you ever found yourself short of face wash or make up remover and resorted to using shower gel or soap? It leaves your skin dry and dull.
Made with calming Balm Mint and Lavender extracts, it removes impurities without disturbing the skin’s natural moisture balance. One of the biggest tests of a good cleanser is how well it removes make up, and I’m pleased to report that this one stripped even the most stubborn of water-proof mascaras without any scrubbing, due to the natural Quillaja Saponaria (a plant which produces soap bark) which gently foams away toxins and debris.
The consistency is gel like, which quickly foams into gentle bubbles and a little goes a very long way; just a pea sized amount easily does my face, neck and chest. This isn’t a flashy, in your face beauty product with bells on; it’s very simple, and that is the beauty of it – free from any artificial fragrances or colours, it quietly does the job it’s supposed to do, leaving your skin clean and fresh.

This next product, and second in my daily regime is the real star of the show. Dermalogica’s Daily Microfoliant is one of their best sellers and it’s easy to see why.
At first I was a bit sceptical about using an exfoliant on a daily basis as this contradicts all the advice I’ve ever been given, however the formula is so gentle that I step out the shower with skin that feels supple and baby-soft, rather than red and scrubbed half to death. I used to be under the illusion that in order for an exfoliant to work, the results had to be akin to the latter; I’ve tried pretty much every product on the market from sand to coffee granules.
Dermalogica’s Microfoliant really is a breath of fresh air. The smell is divine with a comforting milky, oat-like scent. The product is rice-based and uses rice enzymes to micro-exfoliate dead skin cells. Perhaps one of it’s most interesting features is the texture and form of the product itself; I was surprised to unscrew the lid and be met with a powder. The instructions say to add half a teaspoon to wet hands and lather into a paste, though I honestly don’t even think you need that much of the powder! I can’t see myself running out for a while, as with all the Dermalogica products the sizes and longevity are generous, however I can already tell this is going to be a staple in my bathroom…

When I finish washing my face, I spritz it with Dermalogica’s Multi-Active Toner which is designed to condition skin and prep it for moisture absorption. One of my favourite things about this product is the spray bottle which guarantees no wastage, and no toner dribbling into my hair!
Containing Arnica and Cucumber extracts, it’s a very light, refreshing mist and the first time I used it I immediately thought about how great it would be to use on sticky summer days or after a long flight.

Last, but not least, is the Dermalogica Active Moist Moisturiser. It’s completely oil free and contains Silk Amino Acids alongside natural plant extracts. My favourite thing about this product is the texture; it is neither too watery and oily as some are, and neither too thick and sticky.
The absorbency rate is very impressive, I can finish my skin care routine and put make up on soon after without having to wait ages for my moisturiser to settle. In the evening I layer it a little thicker around my forehead, as this is an area which my Skin Mapping therapist identified as most prone to future wrinkles! Thus far, this is my favourite moisturiser that I’ve experienced and one that I will be staying loyal to.
Having stuck to my Dermalogica skin care regime for a few weeks now, I have genuinely noticed an improvement in my skin. It is far less dry around my cheeks and forehead – which is quite miraculous given the winter weather – whilst less oily around my nose and chin. The blackheads on my chin have also significantly improved, and I can see this through by sight and touch. My skin feels brighter and I am more confident to go out without make up on, and when I do wear make up it sits more evenly and lasts longer.
I honestly can’t recommend Dermalogica products enough – head to your local expert or Dermalogica counter for a free Face Mapping and learn how to look after your skin properly. The products are not cheap, but the value for money is high as they last a long time and the quality is so good; it’s easy to forget how worthy skin is when investing in good products – it’s not something we get a second shot at!
