Last week I had the pleasure of being invited along to a Pro Masterclass at Bobbi Brown’s first Pro Studio in London’s Soho. The evening was led by Pro make up artist Aimee Morrison who demonstrated to a room full of eager bloggers sipping on adorable mini Moëts how to create the ultimate day-to-night Autumn Winter look. It’s not very often that I blog about an event but this one was so jam packed with tricks of the trade and fabulous pieces that I want to shout from the rooftops about, that it would’ve been greedy not to share!
5 MAKE UP HACKS I LEARNT FROM A BOBBI BROWN PRO MUA
1. DON’T FORGET TO BRONZE YOUR EARS TOO
I honestly don’t know why I’ve never thought of this but it made SO much sense. Most of us have finally given up the year 9 orange chin strap look by now, but who actually considers the shade of their ears when they’re busy painting their face? If you’re wearing your hair up and you’ve bronzed or contoured your face then sweep the residue on the brush down your ears too!
2. MAKE GLITTER EYESHADOW STAY BY APPLYING WITH YOUR FINGERTIP
I embarrassingly admitted in front of a room full of beauty pros that I occasionally lick my eyeshadow brush so that highly pigmented or shimmery powders don’t go cascading down my cheeks like a slightly forlorn Christmas tree. Now I’ve embarrassingly admitted it on the internet too. Oops. If you want to be much less gross than me then Aimee demonstrated how dabbing your finger tip into the powder then pressing (rather than sweeping!) it along your lids means that it stays in place no matter how wild the shapes you bust at the Christmas party are! Genius!
3. DOUBLE UP THE USAGE OF CERTAIN PRODUCTS
I’m not suggesting you go all 2008 and start painting foundation over your lips, but the Bobbi Brown pot rouge (YES! Rouge is back!) doubles up as the perfect tinted lip balm. Aimee even said that sometimes she uses her finger to blend a little of her lipstick into the apples of her cheeks for that peachy winter glow.
4. PENCIL LINE YOUR UPPER WATERLINE FOR FULLER, THICKER LASHES
This class really was the ultimate make up bag revival for me; I haven’t used a kohl eyeliner since Billy Joel was my idol. Black eyeliner doesn’t have to be thick and gothic though, press gently onto your eyelid to ‘pop’ up your upper lash line and coat it in Bobbi Brown’s ‘jet’ Long Wear Eye Pencil. Aimee said that the trick to avoiding watering eyes is to be quite firm, tickly movements are more likely to provoke tears!
5. CHEAT THE ULTIMATE SMOKEY EYE WITH A CREAM EYE SHADOW STICK
A quick flick across your lash line with a creamy eye shadow stick like Bobbi Brown’s Bark is the easiest way to achieve an ombre effect smokey eye look in under a minute. You don’t even have to be neat about it, just draw a rough line and then blend upwards with a brush, building up the colour along the lid if you want a darker look. You can go the whole hog by layering powder shadows on top and finishing off with a pop of glitter, or just leave it here and trick everyone into believing you actually had the time to do your eye make up properly at 7.00am on a Monday morning, rather than attacking yourself with a mascara brush on the tube!
